On December 13, 2016, the Administrative Court of Armenia took into proceedings the case brought before the court by Ecological Right NGO against the Ministry of Nature Protection and the Ministry of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources of Armenia demanding the annulment of the documents that the mining permit of the Lichk mine in Syunik Province was based on. According to the documents adjacent to the case, the territory of the Lichk open-pit mine is partially within the boundaries of Arevik National Park where open-pit mining is forbidden in correspondence with Armenia’s Law on Specially Protected Areas. The impact area of the mine also includes representatives of endangered species of flora and fauna registered in Armenia’s Red Book. This would also prohibit mining activities in the area in correspondence with the requirements of the Mining Code of Armenia. The availability of rare biodiversity was not even considered by the relevant authorities carrying out the EIA. The judicial proceedings are still ongoing.
