On May 5, 2017, the Administrative Court of Armenia took up a case brought before the court by Ecological Right NGO against the Ministry of Nature Protection and the Ministry of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources of Armenia demanding the annulment of the approval to the expansion project for the Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum mine. We are disputing the EIA expert conclusion provided by the relevant state authorities effectively permitting the mining company to expand the mining area and extend the exploitation time while bringing levels of production to 22 million tons per year. EcoRight has challenged the data presented by the mining company with regards to the storage capacities of the Artsvanik tailings dam, where, according to the project, the mining wastes of Kajaran will go. Another thing being disputed is the legitimacy of the EIA positive conclusion. Based on the same conclusion, the mining company was allowed to exploit the mine for another 25 years, whereas the tailings dam, according to the same mining project, can be used to store wastes only for 12 years. Legal proceedings are still ongoing.
